Classifying goods: HS codes, duty and drawback
The tariff line you choose drives duty, incentives and inspection risk at both ends of the journey.
How classification works
The first six digits of an HS code are common worldwide; countries add their own digits after that. Your Indian eight-digit code and the buyer's ten-digit code can differ while describing the same goods.
Classification follows the material and function of the goods, not their brand or intended use in marketing terms.
Why it matters commercially
The code determines duty drawback and RoDTEP rates, whether a preferential origin certificate helps, and how likely the consignment is to be examined.
Aggressive classification to chase a higher incentive is the fastest route to a post-clearance audit.
When in doubt
Ask the buyer's customs broker which line they intend to declare, and align before the first shipment.
For high-value programmes, an advance ruling gives certainty and is worth the time it takes.
